diy: monogram over the bed

If you all remember this post from last week, you know I had to replace the sunburst mirror over our bed.  Knowing the danger of having something over our heads (lesson learned), I wanted to find a safe replacement.  Everything is very rectangular in our bedroom so I also wanted something round.

I originally planned to pick up a round canvas and do a monogram on just one piece, but our local art store did not carry round canvases.  I searched around the store and finally decided to pick up some papier-mâché round box lids in two different sizes.  They were sweet enough to just sell me the lids.  Love that kind of luck.  I painted the lids black, and then painted our initials with some gold paint I had in my paint box.

This project cost me $15 and took 2 hours.  As with any diy, you always under estimate the time it will take.  I free-handed all the letters (which I'm sure is obvious by looking at it- it is so not perfect) and I love the way it turned out.  The imperfections remind me of how much Chris & I love the mustache ships I painted a few years back.  And the different sizes actually create some height/shape over the bed.  This will definitely hold us over until we get a new headboard.
In person the gold is much more gold, not so yellow...
yes, our bed is super wrinkly, etc. I at least removed the remotes and other junk you didn't want to see :)
only a million other things I'd like to do to our room, but it's nice having one thing checked off the list!

*pillows: caitlin wilson design, rug: big lots, lamps: joss & main, headboard: west elm, bedside tables: local store, duvet: pottery barn, mint box: marshalls

  6. Great idea! I like the idea for my daughter's room - her bed is up against a half wall and I'd like something to put there as a full headboard is not an option!

    Looks great!
