+ GUEST ROOM UPDATE: THE BIG RUG DILEMMA OF 2013

We are slowly making progress in the guest room.  Mainly, I cleaned out most of the stuff that was being stored in here.  Funny how a second room quickly turns into a storage unit (especially when you don't have a garage).  But what I really want to talk about today, is the rug.

We have being searching obsessively for the perfect rug for this space.  We felt like the bed wasn't anchored without something under it, thus our hunt began.  And, on top of everything.  I am beyond picky about our space.  When I help friends pick out items for their homes, I don't even have to think twice- but, my own...sometimes paralyzed by indecision.

Originally, I wanted a jute rug for this room.  Keep it cozy, natural with a few punches of color...but, the jute made it feel like a cream box.  Note: The owners of our home just painted it and rather we hold off on changing the wall color for now.  And, the blinds are a brown (I plan on doing a roman over it or drapes) which also already gives the space an element of natural colors/fibers.  At any rate, we have hunted online, at specialty rug stores, at big box stores- and, I think we found one?  Again, think...I do love the color (kinda brings out the color in the headboard), the texture (it is so soft), the fact that my guests won't worry about getting it dirty, the ombre vibe going on & for whatever reason it reminds me of two things: the ocean (which is so close to us) and a cozy sweater.

Things to note that will also change the room up.  1. that piece of art won't be just thrown randomly on the wall 2. there will be new tables placed in here (instead of a wooden crate & our old bamboo bathroom organizer) 3. there will be different lamps 4. window treatments 5. art 6. dresser etc. so you have an idea of other factors around this rug

Here's my question for you all:

1. do I keep this rug and stop looking or
2. try a leopard rug (LOVE this idea) or
3. opt for a bold graphic print rug?

also, as obnoxious as this is- the rug has to be close to 5x7 or 6x7 or 7x7 which pretty much only the 5x7 exists unless you go custom!

i'd love your opinion :)

& thank you to all who read this post in it's entirety .  who would have thought there could be so many words around a rug...

  1. I also love the idea of the leopard rug (I love pretty much anything leopard right now) but, I think it might be too big of a print for such a small space? I really like this rug in the room and I totally get what you mean about it reminding you of the ocean. I think that also makes the room feel a little bigger. Just my two cents:)

  2. I would go with a solid color with a textural graphic, like this: http://www.westelm.com/products/chevron-knot-rug-r895/?pkey=crugs-flooring&cm_src=rugs-flooring||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_--_-

    1. I tried a rug like that, but it had that feeling of just being a cream box. Ugh. Still torn.

  3. I'm super picky about stuff too. I think that one you picked is great, but a graphic print could be good too!

  4. Gosh, too bad you can't paint the walls. That would totally change things. Could you do a trellis print or are you tired of that fad? Something like this: http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-trellis/slate/200ACR129A-28010.html
I do really like the rug you picked out, but the walls are so boring (because of the color), I almost think more design on the floor would be a nice pop against the crisp bedding. Also, you have that fabulous geometric pillow...it would be cool to get a rug that pulls more of that design element in.
Just my two cents, but I think all your ideas sound great!

    1. I know, eventually we will need to try and paint the walls ;) I'm not entirely sick of the trellis, I think it's a classic- but, I've had a hard time finding a rug in the right size we need. 5x7 or 7x7. I agree though, my preference was always between a geometric rug or the jute- and now I know the jute doesn't work. I'll need to start searching for a geometric rug in our size now. The search continues. Thank you for your opinion!

  5. I'm with Sarah on this one. I immediately thought "grey trellis rug" for two reasons: 1) I think you have to embrace the yellow walls if you can't paint, and I love grey with yellow. I think it would still work with the headboard too. And 2) I think the room needs a little pattern to jazz it up.

  6. This could be good too, more blue than grey http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-moroccan-trellis/blue/200HJHK06B-508.html

    1. I agree. I looked at the trellis rugs. The only issue with a lot of them...is sizing. The room is so so so tiny and needs a 5X7, preferably a 7X7. Thanks for looking up this rug for me ;)

  7. You can go for some dark colors rather than the lighter shades.

  8. I know how you feel about having trouble deciding on things for your own home! I have the same problem! I'm leaning toward the bold graphic rug.

  9. I love the idea of trying a leopard rug, as long as you put up the roman shade!

Where did you get your headboard and polka dot pillow covers?

  10. I think a lighter rug will be less seen and make the room look bigger. Plus I would hang your beautiful wll photo on the other side to even out the the space as the mag stand is smaller on the right side or put two photos oe even three on the right side and keep the other in it’s original space! Love the bedding...

  11. I would keep the rug. You can always use a color scheme that incorporates the rug and the gorg pillow you have on the bed! Since you are going to make other changes, just hang on to it and see if it still gives you that great vibe when your room is more put together. PLUS, I am a fan of natural design too but sometimes it takes away the color from our lives. See where it takes you...

  12. I agree with the trellis rug commenters! I think since you've already got light colors~ salmon pink on the pillow, light blue on the headboard (LOVE both btw), tan shades, and perfect white/cream bedding that you should keep with staying easy breezy. The rug you have now seems way too heavy in color and texture to me.

  13. Oh my goodness. I feel your pain. I have been agonising on what kind of rug to get for our living room for sooooo long. So you're not crazy :) I would say opt for a bold print only because from these pics it looks a little dull... but once you change the side tables and add a roman blind it could look great. I guess it depends which colours you are going for in your other furniture. I'd do those first then decide about the rug. I'd love to see more of the colour from the cushion :)
