+ DIY: MERCURY GLASS

{I finally tried this, you can see my results here}

I'm catching up on a little light magazine reading because I'm finally DONE with finals this semester and that's about all I have the energy for! I'm so happy, but incredibly beat!  Anyway, I saw this idea in Martha Stewart Living to make your own Mercury Glass and really want to try it.  Besides looking really simple to do, I love that I can upcycle my old clear vases into a little arrangement that looks nice, like this:

All you need is a couple of clear vases or votives, a spray bottle with water and mirror paint. You can get the mirror paint from here.

Clean your vase or votive then cover the exteriors with paper.  Spray the interiors lightly with water and then with mirror paint. Turn upside down to dry overnight and then repeat if too sheer. When finished, if you want to use it for flowers, just make sure to put them in a glass and then place glass in vase.  Done!  This would be a really inexpensive way to dress up a table for a party or a mantle for the Holidays!

I love this idea!  I definitely have a thing for mercury glass, you can see that here and here.

Has anyone tried this before?

  13. What a fabulous idea! I adore the look of mercury glass! I had an arrangement of pieces for our tablescape last year...but our kitties took care of that. Sigh.

  22. Ah! Just how much better than my previous attempt is this...! I'd seen 2 other versions - both more complicated and less good looking! Now it is both cheap, quick, and nicer looking, yay! I'm going to save up my jamjars... :-)

  24. I have been using your technique to make votives for my wedding, but I'm not getting a good coating, they almost look clear, and I've put on about 5 to 10 coats of the Krylon Looking Glass spray paint. I want them to have a speckled look, but when I use the water, it makes the paint even thinner and runnier. Any suggestions?

  25. I've done this w/ votives, leaving them as sprayed, but I have some larger pieces that I want to 'age' more. Even though there's an extra step (or two - depending on the tutorial), I want to try it.

  27. I just saw a way to do the OUTSIDE of your vase, so that you don't have to put "glass in a glass"......spray your piece 2-3 times, drying between, and then when dry pour vinegar on it.....it done!!
    I have NOT tried this.....but on the video I saw...it worked!!! Happy Mercuring!!!
